BRANSON GOSPEL MUSIC CONVENTION

The Ozarks have long been known for gospel music.

Brush arbors. Singing schools. Tent meetings. Southern quartet-style singing. And it's a rare Ozark music show that doesn't include a southern gospel number or hymn.

However, as the last decade has shown, there has been a push to modernize, a push to make the Ozarks a bit more like the rest of the world. And to nudge Branson into becoming a "family-friendly Las Vegas," leaving hillbillies far behind.

Well, hillbilly culture is something worth respecting. It's something worth saving. Worth promoting. And good gospel music and ministry is a great big part of what makes our Ozarks a good place to be.

To that end, I'm awfully proud of the work Rod and Kelly Burton, owners of the Branson Gospel Music Convention, have done.

Rod and Kelly hail from my home state of Illinois and they respect the importance that gospel music has, not only in the nation, but right here in the Ozarks.

The '09 Branson Gospel Music Convention surprised many of us with its heartfelt success and more is planned for 2010.

Dates of the event are June 28 through July 2 at the Branson Convention Center. Ya'll make plans to be there. It'll be fun.

McGlamery, from the Grammy-nominated group Karen Peck & New River, joins Signature Sound as lead vocalist. He is filling the position held by Ryan Seaton. McGlamery is a former member of the Dixie Melody Boys.

"To say I'm excited is an understatement," says McGlamery. "Ernie and I have been great friends for years. I've always had a lot of admiration for him as a singer and as a person and he has always encouraged me."

"I want to thank Karen Peck so much for everything over the last five years," the singer concludes. "She let southern gospel music get to know the real me.

• MARK TRAMMELL TRIO will become the Mark Trammell Quartet later this year. "I guess George Younce was right: I am, and always have been, a quartet man at heart. We are excited about the days ahead and being able to deliver our brand of traditional four-part harmony to those who have been such a great encouragement." The new bass singer has not yet been announced.

Sargent replaces Stephen Gillmore.

GOLD CITY NEWS

Gold City Quartet welcomes new members Roy Webb and Joshua Cobb (pictured above).

"We have had our share of changes in the past several months," says Daniel Riley, baritone singer for the group. "God has assembled a great team of talented men, ready to carry on the legacy that was started 30 years ago."

Piano player Roy Webb has traveled with Ernie Haase & Signature Sound for over three years. He also works as a solo artist.

Joshua Cobb, original tenor for Legacy Five and former Horizon Individual Singing News Fan Award winner says, "It feels great to be able to join forces with such a heralded quartet."

"We knew Joshua was singing. We just didn't know where," concludes Riley. "So we tracked him down and learned he had a solo ministry and has turned down incredible offers in the past few years. With a voice like his, I'm not surprised he was in such demand."

FULLY COMMITTED CD FROM THE JAY STONE SINGERS RELEASED

Popular family group The Jay Stone Singers, composed of (from left) Emma, Bobby, Stone and Sharona Carter, joined the Pinnacle family of artists in April of this year.

The result, album Fully Committed, was released on July 1.

The album features the radio release God Is Good (already in the top 10 of Springfield's KWFC 89.1-FM's Ozarks Top 20 chart) as well as two songs written by Sharona Carter (Prayer of a Soldier's Child and I Want To Be Free), the show-stopping a cappela Lord of the Dance and the touching and powerful Crimson Stain, written by Justin Peters and Daron Glenn, performed by Emma.

"When we began in 1976," writes Sharona, "we didn't know exactly where God would send us. In the beginning, it was Jay and Mary Stone, my brother Jeff and myself.

"Recently, we find ourselves having come full circle.

"Jay and Mary have passed the mantle on to their children with the assurance that God is not finished with this ministry or this family.

"Whether you have known us for a long time or are just getting to know us, we want you to know that we pledge ourselves totally and completely to the call and purpose that God has placed on our lives. We are fully committed."

Thanks to the Carters' participation in the Branson Gospel Music Convention, a growing number of Ozarkers are discovering this quality family group.

The founding group include Rosey Rozelle on tenor, James Blackwood as lead, baritone Jake Hess, J.D. Sumner on bass and Hovie Lister at the piano.
__

RAMBOS — Consisting of singer-songwriter, Dottie Rambo, her husband Buck, and their daughter Reba, the Rambos' first big hit came in 1967 with He Looked Beyond My Faults. Sung to the tune Londonary Aire (Danny Boy), the words were written by Dottie.

The Rambos, known originally as the Gospel Echoes, were most active during the 1960s and '70s, and were the first gospel group to entertain American troops in Vietnam.
