The home-spun and artistic side of historic downtown Branson will be celebrated May 17-19.
Since 2012 is Branson’s Centennial, activities that were attractions during the first few years of Plumb Nellie Days will highlight the historical event, such as a Reuben Branson Look-Alike Contest. The city was named after Reuben Branson who was an area postmaster and store owner in the 1880s. It’s time to start growing those beards men!
The Plumb Nellie Days stage will host a notable line up of entertainers throughout the event, plus a special booth where performers can meet and greet their fans. A very popular feature of Plumb Nellie Days is its Friday night street dance with a live band, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
The three day event is in downtown Branson on Commercial Street at the corners of Commercial and Main streets, an entire city block.
Few changes have been made since Plumb Nellie made its debut in April 1960. The event has grown to more than 100 artisans and crafters. • WINTER TROUT FISHING — ONE OF BRANSON’S BEST KEPT SECRETS
Branson, MO - (Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012) -- Mild winter temperatures should beckon locals and regional outdoorsmen Saturday to the first of two open fishing tournaments on Lake Taneycomo, both sponsored by Lilleys' Landing Resort and Marina in Branson. Cash prizes and trophies are awarded to the top four two-person teams in these catch-and-release contests.
Lake Taneycomo, one of the best trout fisheries in the country, often gives anglers their biggest thrills in the winter, whatever the temperatures. The water never freezes since it flows fresh from the bottom of Table Rock Lake through Table Rock Dam, and there are lots of options for anglers to try different techniques as they boat to various parts of the lake.
Phil Lilley, who compiles regional fishing information to share at www.Ozarkanglers.com said, "Rainbows have been in abundance and the average size has been a little bigger, especially outside the trophy area."
Both this Saturday and February 25 fishermen will take off at 8 a.m. from Lilleys' Landing, returning at 4 p.m. for the weigh-in and a free meal. The entry fee is $50 per each two-man team; usually between 25 and 40 teams enter. Since both tournaments are catch-and-release, anglers can only use artificial baits.
Marabou jigs have long proved to be a mainstay on the lake, because they are cheap at $1 each, and can last through a dozen or more fish. Lilleys' Landing tackle shop carries jigs in several different size of weights to vary with Taneycomo's generation schedule. Scuds and midges are also great to try in the upper lake, sometimes with a tandem rig tied with an egg fly or a San Juan worm 18 inches below the scud.
In the 30-plus years of annual winter tournaments on Lake Taneycomo, anglers have learned to prepare for a wide range of weather. Some years, the high temperature has reached 70; others have dipped to below freezing with snow and sleet. But the weather is all part of the outdoor adventure, contestants say, as they just add layers and pack hand and feet warmers.
Entry forms for both tournaments are available at the Lilleys Landing office, 367 River Lane off of Fall Creek in Branson, or at the website, lilleyslanding.com. There are a few boats left to rent on Saturday through the resort, which may be reserved by calling (417) 334-6380.
