Below, the following excerpts are from from The Grand Old Lady of the Ozarks by D.R. Woolery.

The "Old Lady" in reference happens to be the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs.

1886 — 1901 ... The Carriage Set

For the first 15 years after its grand opening, the Crescent Hotel was operated by the Eureka Springs Improvement Company as an exclusive, year-round hotel catering to the carriage set.

During those Victorian years, the southern hospitality of the place was widely known.

A stable with a hundred horses was provided for the guests' riding pleasure on early morning canters over the trails.

Often as many as 75 riders could be seen making their way along some remote mountain trail — ladies in their long skirts, hats, and veils, mounted fashionably on side-saddles while the gentlemen were gallantly astride mounts with English saddles.

Visitors could enjoy tea dances during the afternoon and dance parties each evening with music provided by an in-house string orchestra maintained by the hotel.

White-jacketed waiters hovered over the guests around the large swimming pool catering to their slightest whim.

A long boardwalk, promoting many a romance, led to the shaded summerhouse.
Other forms of recreation available to the guests included picnics, hiking, street car rides, and the ever popular Tally-ho rides to Sanitarium Lake (later Lake Lucerne).

The Tally-ho was a large open coach drawn by teams of four, six, or eight horses.

Depending on its size, the elegantly designed rig had seating for as many as 35 persons.

Both the livery stables and the hotels advertised Tally-ho rides to Berryville and other scenic locations.
