It's easy to forget the war even occurred west of the Mississippi.

Not enough has been written about this "Western front," though a few books do exist.

State of the Ozarks is dedicated to publishing as much regional Civil War history as possible.

It is our history and heritage. It should not be forgotten.

"...whoever knows the depth of the German love of freedom will know what the mission of Germans in this crisis must be."
St. Louis Anzelger des Westens, Dec. 17, 1860

German immigrants found a democratic climate in America unlike anything in the Old World.

For them, the United States represented the one hope of all freedom-loving mankind. When secession and civil war threatened the Union, Missouri Germans rushed to defend it. Their uncompromising loyalty to the ideals of American democracy is part of our Missouri heritage.
