Excerpt "Many Americans think that storytelling is a dying art because it is absent from their hi-tech, modern lives. But in areas of the world where technologies are parallel to, or even secondary to, more traditional ways of life, storytelling flourishes....Surely we have not all seen on television the careful maintenance of traditional crafts, folk arts, folk music and storytelling in the Appalachian Mountains, where a satellite dish casts a shadow on a front-porch banjo picker and kids turn off the laser disc to ask Grandpa for a ghost story. There is another, less well-documented region of America where traditional storytelling is observed: the Ozarks." _______ From the editor: visitors to State of the Ozarks may notice a number of quotes (some quite extensive) from this text. And some may wonder why quotes from a "ghost story book" should end up under topics such as Natural Heritage or History. Quite simply, this folklore text written by Richard and Judy Dockrey Young is such an excellent resource, it should be required reading for anyone interested in Ozark culture, history or geography. I cannot recommend this text highly enough. If the Ozarks are a topic of interest to you, be sure to get a copy of this book. |
